Museum Centers Department
The Museum Centers Department is the administrative unit that coordinates all museum-related activities in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. It is responsible for the control of the movable heritage stored at the museums and museum centers owned by the Regional Government and the Spanish state and assigned to the Directorate General of Culture, as well as those that make up the Galician Museum Centers System. This Department also provides advice and acts as a vehicle for continuous collaboration between technical staff from the different museums, so as to achieve a single, unified institutional policy regarding the procedures and the technical care and treatment of the collections.
Functions
The Museum Centers Department has the following functions:
- The coordination and technical direction of the Galician system of museum centers and the different networks that integrate it, as well as the inspection of the Galician museum centers and their cultural heritage.
- The management of the museums of autonomous ownership assigned to this department and those of state ownership of management transferred to the Autonomous Community of Galicia.
- The processing and the report of the procedures for the creation, authorization and qualification of museums, museographic collections and cultural heritage interpretation centers according to the current regulations.
- The update and control of the General Register of Galician Museum Centers.
- The inventory of the movable heritage guarded in Galician museums, as well as the control of the movements, restoration and reproduction of the movable heritage guarded in them.
- The support and technical advice in matters of movable heritage and museums of interest for Galicia.
- The programming, coordination and management of the actions in matters of increase, conservation, documentation, research and diffusion of the heritage guarded in Galician museum centers.
- The taxation of cultural assets of a museum nature for administrative purposes.
- To encourage the management for the increase of the movable patrimony of the own and managed museums through the different forms of income foreseen by the current regulations.
- Administrative support to the Council of Galician Museum Centers.
- Any other analogous function entrusted to it.
Permits and applications
The Museum Centers Department is responsible for the processing of applications relating to:
- The control of movements, restorations and reproductions of the movable heritage in the museums and museum centers belonging to the Galician Museum Centers System: control of the pieces leaving the museums and of those undergoing interventions or restorations.
- Increases in and documentation of the movable heritage of Galicia:
- Acquisitions, donations and deposits (on loan) of pieces in the museums managed by the Regional Government of Galicia.
- Inventories of the movable heritage in the museums and museum centers in the Galician Museum Centers System.
- Deposits of archaeological findings in museums and museum centers in the Galician Museum Centers System.
- Authorization, recognition and creation of museums or museum centers in the Autonomous Community of Galicia.
- Authorization of publications, reproductions and the economic management of regional and state-owned museums assigned to the Directorate General of Culture.
- Management of agreements.

Galician Museum Centers System
The Galician Museum Centers System is made up of all the museums and museum centers of different kinds owned by different bodies in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, authorized by the Regional Ministry of Culture, Language and Youth and registered in the General Register of Museum Centers.
The powers attributed to the Regional Ministry of Culture, Language and Youth in this field are exercised above all in the museums it owns and in the state-owned museums that it manages, and also in the over 8 museum centers and collections spread around the different parts of Galicia, and belonging to local administrations, private foundations and the Church.
