Ethnological Museum of Ribadavia

The museum

It is situated in Ribadavia’s old town, in a small palace known as Pazo de Baamonde or Casa da Fundación.

The museum is currently undergoing refurbishments, but is open to the public, offering temporary exhibitions focusing on the world of textile and clothing, image and photography from a photo-ethnographic perspective, popular music and other themes linked to rural culture in the province of Ourense.

The collections bring together materials of ethnographic interest from different parts of Ourense, with a specific collection on wine-growing culture, which in the future is to form a part of a separate ethnographic section in its own building.

The type of collection held by the museum is wide-ranging and varied, preferably objects from the rural context above all, but also from the urban context prior to the introduction of industrial production methods. Oral and audiovisual archives, as well as an outstanding documentary collection, also form an important part of the museum’s holdings, providing a vast number of photographic images relating, for the most part, to the life and history of the Ribeiro region.

Ribadavia’s Ethnographic Museum is state owned, but managed by the Xunta de Galicia.
