The museum
The Massó Museum is to be found in the industrial premises of what used to be the Massó Hermanos canning factory, near the port of Bueu, in the ria of Pontevedra and the heart of the Morrazo peninsula. The idea to create a museum was at the suggestion of Guillermo Marconi during his visit to the Massó canning plant in 1928. He was surprised by the collection of navigational instruments, documents and old books, curious objects and models of historical ships he encountered in the family home. On his advice, the Massó brothers built another storey onto the oldest part of the factory and so, in 1932, the Massó Museum was born.
Over time, stories regarding the canning and whaling plants, as well as fishing activities, would complete the museum’s profile. In 1994, after the closure of the factory, the museum was acquired by the Xunta de Galicia. Today, maritime and industrial heritage coexists with the erudite spirit of collecting from times gone by.
