Blackboard

Rectangular object made up of seven horizontal wooden planks painted black with special paint for blackboards to enable them to be written on.  The planks are framed with four pieces of wood which are held together with iron nails.  On the bottom right it also has a small wooden box where the chalk and the board rubber were kept.

First appearing in the 18th century the blackboard has been a fundamental support tool for teachers’ spoken presentations, allowing them to illustrate their explanations and present them in a coherent, ordered and synthetic context.  It could also be used by the pupils and allowed the teacher to watch the children at work and tutor them step by step.
