Octopus boat

Octopus boat

This traditional vessel was used for catching fish for home consumption by the fisherman and his family and was exclusive to the town of Bueu, in the Ría de Pontevedra.

The bote polbeiro de Bueu is a small-scale version of the lancha xeiteira. Like the xeitera it was designed to be very stable and was also well-suited for octopus fishing, as it was easy to sail amongst the rocky waters of the ria.

Like the xeiteira, it fell into disuse because it was impossible to couple a motor to it. The few surviving examples are all museum pieces.
