The harpoon-man Alejo Varela Neira firing a harpoon-cannon from the Lobeiro

When the Massó company purchased vessels and equipment from the whaling factories in Ceuta and Algeciras, they also hired the harpoon-men, while the rest of the crew was recruited in Galicia. The harpoon-man was the most specialized and most respected member of the crew, which is why he was also normally the Captain of the vessel.
