Women workers at the old Massó Hermanos canning factory working at the sardine cleaning table

The first stage of the canning process was to clean out the sardines. This was done by women, while the higher paid, more specialized jobs were reserved for men. At the beginning of the 20th century they worked shifts of 10 to 12 hours, but from 1918 the 8-hour working day became the norm.
