Sea Museum of Galicia

The museum

The Sea Museum of Galicia is located in the old canned food factory of Alcabre-Molino de Viento (1887) in Vigo. At first, the renovation of the building was allocated to Aldo Rossi and César Portela. After Rossi's death, the work ends in 2002, under the direction and revision of César Portela, who looked over the original project. The resulting building is a mixture of avant-garde and tradition, composed of a five restored bays, a newly constructed building also with five bays and the extension of an existing quay, home of an aquarium and a lighthouse.

Fishery, aquarium and much more. The centre line of the museum is fishery activities. The centre aims at providing a global vision, delving into the scientific basis regulating the productivity of the sea and into the understanding of marine ecosystems. The permanent exhibition is divided into two theme areas: sea and fishery. The collection binds closely Galicia with the exploitation of the resources through infographics, documents, videos and other pieces. The facilities also include a large hall for temporary exhibitions, an aquarium that recreates the Rías (Galician harbours) ecosystem and representation of a local Iron Age village: the Castro da Punta do Muiño do Vento.

Underwater heritage. Since 2006, the Xunta de Galicia has been promoting underwater heritage research; the Sea Museum of Galicia is the destination for all the materials related. The museum is currently addressing the creation of a large hall to tell Galicia's maritime history, on a commercial approach. This future hall will house the remains from shipwrecks all over Galician shore.
